A vast majority of the women in the Cook County jail are both mothers and nonviolent. PBN meets with inmates to advise on issues relating to their families: Do their kids have appropriate guardianship? Do they understand what legal steps they need to take to parent again? How do they register to be found by a now-adopted child? These are just a few of the matters our attorneys address.

One example of what this effort by our volunteer attorneys has accomplished: a baby was provided safer care with his grandmother, away from an abusive father.

This grandmother received guardianship of her granddaughters after one of our volunteers met with their mother. This gorgeous photo was provided to us by CLAIM. It reminds of what we often don't get to see outside of the paperwork!
